In international relations, research in a constructivist mode has exploded over the past decade, creating new and potentially fruitful connections with long-standing interest in these issues in comparative politics. In this essay, we evaluate the empirical research program of constructivism in these two fields.
Doing so, constructivists offer alternative explanations and insights for events occurring in the social world. To be a constructivist in international relations means looking at international relations with an eye open to the social construction of actors, institutions, and events. Indeed, norms, identity, and ideas are key factors in constructivist theory. The relationship between “ Critical Theory of International Relations ” or “ Feminist Theories of International Relations ”and constructivist IR theory is contested. Theory. Constructivism primarily seeks to demonstrate how core aspects of international relations are, contrary to the assumptions of neorealism and neoliberalism, socially constructed, that is, they are given their form by ongoing processes of social practice and interaction. Constructivism, like International Relations theory as whole, has had surprisingly little to say about al-Qaeda, however. Realism, with its emphasis on the balance of power among self-interested nation-states, had little to say about a nonstate actor motivated by religion, and doubts the systemic importance of terrorism.
